Abstract: In this study, the effects of cathode gas diffusion layer inks preparation procedures on the performance of a small scale proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) have been investigated. An aspect that has not been reported in detail elsewhere. Properties of diffusion layers have been studied by physical and electrochemical techniques. Homogeneity of the inks supplied following three methods based on ultrasonic waves: pulse ultrasonic, ultrasonic and bath ultrasonic technique. MEAs showed dominant different performances in three regions of polarization, especially in mass transport activity due to various permeability caused by various particle size distributions. Results showed that bath ultrasonic treatment is an effective procedure that achieves more ink homogeneity and consequently cell performance improvement
