Abstract: In recent years, due to successive load growth and some technical restrictions for developing power networks such as social and economic constraints, it has necessitated efficiently run power system in maximum capacity. Power transmission network is considered as a framework for competition in the environment of deregulated and restructured power systems. But its deficiency could undesirably consider as a restrictive factor for competition. Enhancing power transfer limit (PTL) could result in increased security margin and competition. For this purpose, it is essential to utilize the installed capacity of the power transmission network in the maximum efficiency. In this paper, an approach based on finding the most appropriate place for installing PST and setting its controlling parameters for improving PTL is proposed. The main objective of this work is to improve the power transfer limit by phase shifting transformer (PST) without any changes in the existing network topology and load generation pattern. For this purpose, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is utilized to determine the optimal location, number and setting of a PST aimed at improving the power transfer limit. The proposed approach has been implemented in the IEEE 39-test system with promising results showing its effectiveness and applicability.
